Gorani Muslims celebrate Orthodox St George’s Day | Kosovo
The south of Kosovo is the home to the ethnic Gorani. Gathering of several thousand Gorani near Vranishta village, Dragash celebrate the orthodox holiday of St George’s is an unusual event. Gorani are Muslim by religion, but this holiday has been celebrated since pagan times.
St George’s Day is marked by three days in Gorani villages with
different customs and folklore festivals which celebrate the end of
winter and beginning of spring.
The Gorani live in the northern slopes of Sar Mountain and the intersection of Kosovo, Albania and Macedonia.
The Gorani people are Muslims by faith , but their traditions and
customs are full of pagan elements. During wedding festivities the bride
is carried on a white horse covered with a scarf and an umbrella that
is decorated for the occasion. The bride accompanies her family to the
neighbor's house of the future husband.
There is a legend of Gora, which was created at a time when very few
were literate: "When God created the world, Gora was placed in the worst
place - among the hills and mountains, where winter lasts six months.
That is why Gora was sad and dejected. God said to her:
- What is the matter? Why are you cheerless?Gora, in tears, replied:
- How can I be happy when I am alone at the end of the world and as such no one will be with me.
God felt sorry for her and promised:
- Do not be sad, I will send you people. It will be sad and happy for you.
The question of origin of the Gora population has been a puzzling
question for decades attracting authors from the Balkans and beyond.
Special interest intensified during the breakup of Yugoslavia, in fact,
over the past twenty years. Many writers have written about the Gora
region in their historic and political or anthropo-geographical
research. Very often their positions were mainly one-sided and
contentious by conclusion.

Every year, with the arrival of spring, sometime in early March, the children begin with preparation of the Spring fire. Children were divided into two groups are competing over who will collect tires, old shoes and spruce for the Spring fire.
Children those days are like soldiers, have their chief, and they are very active and very playful. In looking around the old tires, the house takes old clothes and shoes, and in the nearby forests collected spruces.
Competition between the two groups lasted until the beginning of May, when the separate sites, preparing Spring fire. That day, the winner of that group, which has a higher fire. However, every year the winners were two groups. Both groups claim that their Spring fire, was the largest. And judges do not, so until next spring recounts that day, and every boy brags that the fire from his group was the largest.
Thereafter remain destroyed meadow, grass and trees.

PROLJETNA VATRA
Svake godine, sa dolaskom proljeća, negde početkom marta,
deca počinju sa pripremom za Proljetnu
vatru (kup). Deca su podeljena u dve grupe i nadmeću se ko će sakupiti više
guma, staru obuću i smreke za Proljetnu
vatru.
Deca su tih dana su kao vojnici, imaju svog nadređenog, i
veoma su aktivni i veoma razigrani.
U okolini traže stare gume, od kuće uzimaju staru odeću i obuću, a u obližnjim šumarcima sakupljaju smreke.

Nadmetanje između dve grupe traje sve do početka maja kada
na zasebnim mestima, pripremaju Proljetnu
vatru. Tog dana je pobednik ona grupa koja ima veću vatru. Međutim, svake
godine pobednici su obe grupe. I jedna i druga grupa tvrde da je njihova Proljetna vatra, bila najveća. A sudaca
nema, tako da do narednog proljeća prepričava se taj dan, i hvali se svaki dečak
da je vatra iz njegove grupe bila najveća.
Nakon toga ostanu uništena livada, trava i drveće.

Serbian elections in Kosovo

In Kosovo today to vote in the Serbian presidential and parliamentary elections and at 28 locations, and at 90 polling stations north and south of the Ibar.
OSCE in Pristina, the mission that is otherwise neutral towards the status of Kosovo, achieved with the government in Pristina and Belgrade agreement to organize the Serbian elections in Kosovo.
While Serbian officials say that the OSCE will only monitor the elections, the Government of Kosovo claim that the OSCE will hold elections in accordance with the laws of Kosovo.
To polling stations in the village Vranishta in the municipality Dragash,was opened with some delay, and so far has been minor irregularities.
In the village Vranishta are locatet parallel Serbian municipalities, Gora.
The people who come to a vote to not allow anyone photographed them, for fear that later have some problems.
